Hurricane IAN Disaster Response

Hurricane Ian hit the southwestern Florida coastline as a Category 4 storm on September 28. The storm brought high winds, storm surge, and flooding. Damage along its path extend across the Florida peninsula, from Ft. Myers Beach, where it made landfall, through Orlando, where it caused flooding, and on to St. Augustine in the upper northeastern corner. Emergency Management and First Responders are still assessing storm damage and recovery operations. Once the storm areas are re-opened, we will be facilitating response teams. This page is a space to exchange shared resources. Please read below for information regarding teams, needs, and donations.

IMMEDIATE NEEDS

We are currently only calling for volunteers from the Florida and Southern Florida districts, with opportunities for out of state volunteers in the near future. Teams will stay at one of the following locations, and work on that church property and in the community:

  • Kissimmee First Church - Samaritan Village (55+ living) in Kissimmee sustained major damage when Shingle Creek flooded. Local Florida churches who are interested in sending a team are asked to contact Mike Shinn (mikeshinn20@yahoo.com or 239-257-8035).

OTHER SITES — see directions below:

  • Fort Myers Anthem Church

  • Port Charlotte Genesis Church

  • Lehigh Acres Church

  • Lake Placid Camp and Conference Center (Volunteers will work solely on the campground)

While work may vary, the work is likely to be similar at each site: chainsaw work, tarping roofs, property cleanup and debris removal, mucking out of homes, tearing out damaged construction, finding memorabilia for families, spiritual and emotional support, etc. Currently, some locations have electricity and others do not. These conditions can change. NDR will work with you on a location that works best for your team and the community you will be serving.

If you are interested in bringing a team to support relief efforts, do not contact the sites directly, please contact Mikayla Shockley at mshockley@ncmi.org. She will begin the process of registering you and assigning you to a location. Please provide your team leader name and contact info, as well as an estimated size of the team and when you are available.
